My name is David Hoanh Phat Tien (pronounced David "wang fat T.N".Since the last few years of High School my friends have been calling "Kid" (and the many variants, e.g Kidabean, Kidderminster, Kidda, etc) which has pretty much become my primary call-sign; for a long time many of my friends didn't know my real first name!
I'm a British Born Chinese (BBC) living in England. Currently 19 years of age and studying Psychology at University.
When I was young(er), I was very insecure and was affected very badly by the powers of racism. Affected so much so, that I disliked the very fact that I was Chinese and as a result, wasn't really in touch with my asian..ness.
Now more grown up (I'd like to think at least), I love the fact that I am Chinese and am struggling with catching up with my long lost asian qualities. I speak only borderline fluent Cantonese for example, and lost the ability to read and write it. One of the other by-products of my childhood insecurities is that I have very, very, few asian friends. This however, doesn't bother me that much, since the friends that I have now mean more to me than any friend I wish I had, would. My dear friends are naturally, one of the reasons for me taking the time to work on this very LJ. With recent life events causing a disruption in the amount of free time I get to stay in contact with my friends, we're starting to drift ever so slightly apart. With this journal, it at least gives them a chance to know what I've been up to and how I'm doing.
Another reason for this LJ is for me to have a bit of fun. I plan to go to Japan around Christmas time, 2007. I plan to go to a concert of Ayumi Hamasaki's, one that actually hasn't been planned itself yet... I will be using this journal to document the road leading up to Christmas 2007, writing about my thoughts and feelings, about any news I find out about the currently-fictional concert that'll sway my beliefs of whether I'll be successful come December. I'll also give updates on the tweaks to my lifestyle that'll be making, that have been inspired by my plans to go to Japan.
Okay, a bit about what I like:
I have gamer's blood running through my very veins. I love games. Always have. I love competitive games that give your brain-cogs a real good grind. Needing to think of tactics and strategies within split-seconds is something that I've always found quite fun, from playing games ranging from Real-Time Strategies (C&C, Stracraft), First-Person Shooters, (Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield) to the good ol' beat-em-ups (Street Fighter III).
Where my heart truly lies in game genres though, is Role-Playing Games (RPG). I can't get enough of truly gripping storylines; getting to follow a character through both their physical and emotional journeys as the game is played through. Final Fantasy games are good examples of this. With Final Fantasy VII being my all time favourite - it was thegame that introduced me, and hooked me, to the genre of RPGs. I'm also very fond of Kingdom Hearts. Again, having a great storyline behind it with loveable characters, can't really go wrong.I am also a lover of anime. The very first anime series I watched must have been Guyver I think. But I was soooo young when I watched it that I didn't understand any of it and can't actually remember anything about it, apart from the occassional peck rippage to fire some chest cannons. Ha!
These days I am properly into my Bleach and Naruto anime. I've watched other series' on the side but those two are the ones that I follow strongly - mainly because they're still going and out-lived all the other ones I've watched! I have watched the first two Bleach Rock Musicals and loved them both! Can't wait to catch the third one on DVD!
Sometimes, I like to play on the piano. I actually can't read musical at current, so I basically play everything by ear, and memorising entire key-press sequences which really isn't that hard. Thank you Automatic Processing! (Something I've learnt in Psychology. Think driving a car and about much you focussed on things when you were learning, and how you just seem to due it instinctively!) I like to play songs and theme tunes from games or anime that I have liked.
I can play "To Zanarkand" from Final Fantasy X (one of my greatest achievements), a bit of Air anime theme tune - "tori no shi", "never meant to belong" from the Bleach anime OST and a few others. Usually if I hear a nice piano tune or ballad, I will try to hunt down a good midi of it and slap it into this new program I have so I can see what keys are pressed, and learn that way. Other times, if I just hear a good tune from anywhere, piano-played or not, I'll try learn to play it.
So there you have it, a little -albeit lengthy- description, about myself. Feel free to add me if you want, would be great to make a few new friends from this new project of mine! Other than that, thanks for visiting my LJ!
